The Delib Book Centre in Moscow has hosted the launch of the book ‘The Serbian Question Through the Prism of Geopolitical Conflicts in the 20th Century’ by Evgeny Ryabinin. A Candidate of Political Sciences and Associate Professor at the Department of History and Political Science of the Arkhip Kuindzhi Mariupol State University, Ryabinin also serves as the Head of the Representative Office of the Russian–Balkan Centre for Business Cooperation and Culture in the Donetsk People’s Republic (Mariupol).
The discussion was moderated by Elena Ponomareva, a Balkans specialist, Doctor of Political Sciences, and Professor at MGIMO University. Although active military conflicts in the region ended more than 25 years ago, interest in them remains unabated, and the current geopolitical situation in the Balkans is slowly but steadily “simmering”, confirming the region’s reputation as the “powder keg of Europe”.
The meeting was attended by representatives from Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina – the very protagonists of the book. The discussion continued even after the official proceedings were over as the project sparked immense interest among the participants of this unique presentation!
As a reminder, the book was published in 2025 by the Balkan Diplomat publishing house. The publication was initiated by Evgeny Osenkov and Mikhail Yaruev and was supported by PMK-710. In his work, the author analyses the tragic fate of the Serbian people, who were subjected to genocide three times in the past century: during the First and Second World Wars, and again during the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. The work focuses particularly on the military conflicts in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, as well as NATO’s aggression against Serbia amidst the ethno-separatist conflict in Kosovo and Metohija.
